Worship: Spiritual Or Not Spiritual?

David McPherson

Not long ago I responded to one who complained about the worship of the church of Christ. I share my response for the benefit of any who might have similar ideas.

Complaint: Worship among members of the church of Christ "is not spiritual in any way."

Response: "Please be careful about giving the impression that you can read the hearts of men. The "spirituality" of one’s worship is going to be something that each one knows. As for me, I strive to engage myself spiritually every time I offer worship to my Heavenly Father. What do you mean by "is not spiritual"? If you mean that it does not involve jumping pews, banging on drums, lowering the lights, speaking in unknown gibberish, or "gettin’ the Holy Ghost" - you’re right, true worship does not resemble that in any way. Members of the Lord’s church humbly seek to worship God as directed in His word, "decently and in order" (1 Cor. 14:40)."

Regardless of society’s changing pleas, may we ever be content to worship God "in spirit and in truth" (Jn. 4:24).
