Optimism

Michael Pickford

The story is told about a fellow who doubted that the train would ever move. He was present on the day the first train was to be tested. He kept saying, “They’ll never get that thing to move.” The engineer threw in the coal and made the fire to roar, soon, the cylinders began to move and the wheels began to turn. The train was rolling! It continued to pick up speed as it went along. Soon, the train was flying by the critic until all he could see was the tail lights of the caboose. He then looked up and said, “They’ll never get that thing stopped.” Have you ever known someone who just seemed to be negative about everything. I have known some in the church who were negative about any work the church might do. Any time someone suggests an idea to evangelize the community, this person always says , “that won’t work.” Others just have a negative attitude about life in general. These people are a great hindrance to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And they are a great discouragement to others. Let’s try to view life from a positive point of view. It will certainly make us appear more attractive to others. Paul wrote, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:13). Do you believe that? You’d better!
