The Pumpkin

Michael Pickford

The pumpkin is completely transformed. It is first washed carefully, then everything on the inside is removed and replaced with a shining light. An expressive face is carved on one side and it is then placed in such a way as to be seen by the world as a new creation. The Christian is much the same. Through the washing away of sins by baptism (Acts 22:16), God removes all that was inside: sin, guilt and misery. We are then filled with the Light of the world, Jesus Christ (Jn. 12:46). God removes the old man, and replaces it with the new (Eph. 4:17-24). He makes us a “new creation” (2 Cor. 5:17) and places us in the church to be viewed by the world (Acts 2:47). After it’s transformation, the pumpkin shows forth the handywork of it’s carver. The Christian is to do the same. Think of this spiritual lesson the next time you see one sitting on someone’s porch.
